Current Advocacy Issues Affecting Senior Services

WRC Senior Services is actively involved in grassroots advocacy related to legislation that affects our residents and clients. We regularly write to, call and meet with our legislators. We need your help too. Together, our voices will be heard! On this page, you can read about current legislation and political issues that affect our seniors and what you can do to help.

Medicare Therapy Caps Exception Process
What's going on? On February 29, 2012, the Medicare therapy caps exception process is set to expire. That means that seniors who have Medicare and need outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy will have their reimbursement for those services capped at $1,880.00 for the 2012 calendar year. These caps are arbitrarily set and do not take into consideration the amount of therapy older people often need following a stroke, hip fracture or other serious illness or injury. The caps also would impose a hardship on seniors who have more than one injury or episode of illness in a year.

What can you do? Send or email a letter to your legislators through this link, telling them that the exceptions process has worked well and needs to be extended. It's very easy and will only take a moment of your time! Thank you so much! The more our legislators hear our message, the louder it will be.

Public Transportation for Seniors
What's going on? More than one in five Americans age 65 and older do not drive due to health or other reasons. Without convenient, affordable transportation, seniors who don't drive have less access to doctors' offices, shopping, and social, family and religious activities. The Senior Transportation and Mobility Improvement Act, S. 1942, would strengthen existing public transit programs for seniors and people with disabilities by giving states added flexibility to utilize their federal funds.

What can you do? Send or email a letter to your senators through this link, asking them to co-sponsor this bill to move it to the Senate floor for a vote. It's very easy and will only take a moment of your time! Thank you so much! The more our legislators hear our message, the louder it will be.
